China’s trade environment is deteriorating as anti-dumping investigations and tariffs by other nations escalate. In the first half of 2024, China faced 64 anti-dumping investigations, a 166% rise from the previous year.India initiated a quarter of these cases, highlighting growing trade tensions between the two countries. This increase is partly due to US efforts to reduce the World Trade Organization‘s role in resolving trade disputes.Several notable cases have surfaced, including Turkey’s investigation into Chinese stainless steel cold-rolled coils and the US’s examination of imports of vanillin.Surge in Trade Probes Puts China Under Pressure.

(Photo Internet reproduction)The European Union has also launched investigations into Chinese lysine and vanillin imports to protect EU producers from underpriced Chinese goods. These investigations are part of a broader trade conflict involving various goods, such as electric vehicles. The US recently initiated anti-dumping investigations into photovoltaic cells from Southeast Asian countries, impacting Chinese companies operating there. The US has imposed high dumping tax rates on products from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, further challenging China’s trade prospects. In Europe, the European Steel Association has supported the EU‘s anti-dumping investigation into Chinese tinplate imports. This action aims to restore fair competition for European steelmakers who have struggled with low-cost Chinese imports. The influx of cheap tinplate has reduced production volumes and market share for EU producers, necessitating protective measures.Overall, China’s trade outlook is grim as more countries are expected to adopt protective tariffs and conduct investigations. This trend reflects a global shift towards protectionism and the complex dynamics of international trade. As nations seek to protect their industries, these actions impact global supply chains and trade relationships, underscoring the interconnected nature of the global economy.
